Simulcra
Group Exhibition: Image as Object
The Shutter Room Gallery | Whangarei 28 May to 1 July 2023
Simulcra is a series of works that is part of a group exhibition called ‘Object-The Physical Image’ curated by Ellen Smith and Chris Schreuder.
The objects on show are experiments with a daisy found during a daily walk along Beach Road in Onerahi. What was natural has been remade into a strange assemblage of objects created by shiny tech consumerism and unnatural reprocessing. They are simulacra, overtaking the original botanical as objects of beauty, substance, and fascination.

The work includes a video of a daisy shown on a Rasberry Pi.
A paper image of that daisy is also captured via a Celestron stereo microscope.
That same image has been 3D printed (using a Creality Ender 3) with white PLA+ (ESUN) and PLA wood filament (3DEA).
Finally, using that same file, Morris and Watson were commissioned to cast the daisy into copper.
